Puppetry and playfulness: The role of the teacher when using arts organisations and programmes in schools (2019)

Abstract: What is the role of the teacher in arts programmes that are delivered in school by external arts educators? When teachers choose to use this type of approach, how can they ensure that these collaborations have maximum impact? Many schools choose to work with galleries, museums and other arts organisations as part of their cultural offer to pupils, and there is evidence that these experiences are valuable in developing a child’s learning, powers and personality. This paper explores the lessons that can be learned from an evaluation of an arts project shared by a puppet theatre company and a cluster of primary schools. Key messages for teachers include the need to develop a strong relationship with the arts professionals involved, the value of the adults in the classroom taking a playful and participatory approach, and the need for clarity with regards to the agreed outcomes and processes. In addition, openness to new experiences for both the adults and pupils involved were vital in making this particular arts collaboration a success.
